John Mayer has been taking lots of requests in response to signs held by audience members during his current solo acoustic tour and continued doing so last night at his concert in Houston. Mayer took it to a new level on Monday at Toyota Center by creating a song in acknowledgement of a sign for a tune that didn’t exist.
The fun interlude came early in the night and followed the 2023 debut of “Speak For Me.” Mayer played the Born And Raised cut by request and told the crowd he likes when fans call the song as it offers “a brief respite from the pressure of wondering if that’s something you wanted.”

Mayer then saw a sign for “Kiss Me On The Other Cheek” and noted, “That’s not a song, I don’t think, unless I have written a song called ‘Kiss Me On The Other Cheek.'” He vamped on a groove and improvised lyrics around a chorus of “Kiss Me On The Other Cheek.” Mayer liked the tune and told the fan with the sign he would split royalties with him.
The guitarist called back to the bit later in the show when he reprised “Kiss Me On The Other Cheek.” He sang the lyric as an intro to the classic “Neon” to the delight of the audience.
Mayer worked a number of rarities into the rest of the setlist in Houston. The opening section featured the tour debut of “St. Patrick’s Day” off 2001’s Room For Squares, while the second acoustic guitar portion of the concert included a rare solo take on “Vultures” from his John Mayer Trio project, the unreleased “Covered In Rain” and the second cover of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” of the tour. Additionally, Mayer fit the John Mayer Trio song “Good Love Is On The Way” into his double-neck acoustic interlude.
