Watch John Mayer & Steve Miller Join Forces For ‘The Joker’ At Madison Square Garden

John Mayer brought his solo acoustic tour to Madison Square Garden on Tuesday for his first of two performances at the famed New York City arena. Mayer welcomed special guest Steve Miller towards the end of the night for a duet on the Steve Miller Band 1973 hit “The Joker.”

Steve Miller wrote “The Joker” with Eddie Curtis and Ahmet Ertegun as the title track for the Steve Miller Band’s 1973 studio album. The song shot to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart early the next year and is a staple of classic rock radio.

Miller emerged during Mayer’s second acoustic guitar portion of the concert. John Mayer provided harmony vocals in backing Steve Miller as both musicians strummed acoustics. Mayer, who had previously performed the song with Miller and a bevy of incredible guitarists at a 2018 concert in honor of Martin Guitars’ Dick Boak, fit in a stellar solo towards the end of “The Joker.”

John Mayer loaded last night’s setlist with career-spanning originals as he’s done at other stops on the tour. He also performed covers of Beyoncé’s “XO,” Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire” and Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’.” The latter closed out the 22-song concert.

Mayer returns to Madison Square Garden tonight.
