John Mayer brought his solo acoustic tour to UBS Arena in Elmont, New York on Saturday, where he continued a trend of working Grateful Dead songs into setlists. The guitarist responded to a fan FaceTiming his parrot by serenading the pet with a short instrumental version of “Bird Song” and went on to play a partial “Althea” later in the evening.
The “Bird Song” banter and snippet followed a performance of the classic “Why Georgia.” John Mayer noticed the fan FaceTiming his pet parrot and quipped “What song should I sing for a parrot?” according to a Redditor at the show. “I don’t know what kind of a moment it makes on stage for me to hold the iPad and look at the bird, but I can see the bird for here,” Mayer said in denying to actually bring the iPad on stage.

“Would the bird know who I am? Am I such a mainstay in the home the bird …,” Mayer continued and then played the start of “Bird Song” while facing the iPad connected to the pet bird via FaceTime. He then lit into “Who Says” from 2009’s Battle Studies.

John Mayer has been taking requests this tour and gave a cover of Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome” a try after explaining he didn’t know the song. Next came the beginning of “Althea,” which he worked into his own “Age Of The Worry.”

The performances of the Grateful Dead songs on Long Island followed the “Dark Star” into “Your Body Is A Wonderland” into “Dark Star” he pulled off in Chicago last week. John Mayer resumes his solo acoustic tour tonight in Charlotte.
