Watch Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit Perform ‘Cast Iron Skillet’ Live At Red Rocks
The song is the third and latest single from the band’s forthcoming Weathervanes album.
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit took the stage at Colorado’s iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Wednesday for their first of two sold-out concerts at the idyllic venue. The evening’s encore began with one of the first live versions of “Cast Iron Skillet,” the latest single from the band’s forthcoming studio album, Weathervanes.
Weathervanes is set for release on June 9 via Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers. The instant classic “Cast Iron Skillet” finds Jason Isbell in full storyteller mode singing about the life lessons during his upbringing in rural Alabama. Isbell wrote and produced the song as well as the other 12 tracks featured on Weathervanes.
Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit debuted “Cast Iron Skillet” live at The Andrew J. Brady Music Center in Cincinnati last Friday, April 28. The song has been a staple of the group’s sets since. Isbell and company were joined by part-time member and Isbell’s wife, fiddler Amanda Shires, at Red Rocks last night. Shires’ fiddle and Derry DeBorja‘s accordion added the perfect accompaniment to Isbell on acoustic guitar and vocals for “Cast Iron Skillet.”

Wednesday’s show consisted of a 17-song main set with “Cast Iron Skillet” and a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” as the encore. Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit fit the first two Weathervanes singles — “Death Wish” and “Middle Of The Morning” — within the main set. Shires was showcased on the Cat Power cover “Cross Bones Style,” while guitarist Sadler Vaden sang Drivin’ n’ Cryin’s “Honeysuckle Blue” ahead of the “Cover Me Up” that concluded the main set.
Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit return to Red Rocks tonight.
