Jack White Covers New Jason Isbell Single ‘Death Wish’

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit will issue their eighth album, Weathervanes, on June 9 featuring the lead single, “Death Wish.” The song, which was released in February, was recorded and shared by Jack White.

Isbell wrote and produced the 13 new songs making up the tracklist to the follow-up to 2020’s Reunions. Isbell and The 400 Unit — keyboardist Derry deBorja, drummer Chad Gamble, bassist Jimbo Hart, guitarist Sadler Vaden and Isbell’s wife, fiddler/vocalist Amanda Shires – recorded Weathervanes at Blackbird Studio in Nashville.

Morgan O’Shaughnessey and Sylvia Massy contributed strings to the album’s version of “Death Wish.” Press materials described the song, stating:

“Death Wish” is about being in love with someone suffering from depression, with a powerful universal undercurrent about the fragility of life and the power and limits of love. That grown-up kind of love. Musically the track is beautiful and fascinating. Now it feels complicated and intricate, yet never fragile, like the subject of the song itself. As the first track it announces that Isbell is an artist growing, exploring new musical frontiers. The Sylvia Massy-added strings make it bold and ambitious, with the cinematic tone of a Bond theme.
