Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit announced a new studio album entitled Weathervanes featuring the lead single and opening track “Death Wish.” Isbell and his longtime band will support their eighth album with an extensive tour this spring and summer.

Weathervanes is set for release via Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers on June 9. Isbell wrote and produced all 13 tracks on the follow-up to 2020’s Reunions and the 2021 covers album Georgia Blue. Matt Pence provided additional production on five songs.

“There is something about boundaries on this record,” explained Isbell. “As you mature, you still attempt to keep the ability to love somebody fully and completely while you’re growing into an adult and learning how to love yourself.”

Jason Isbell and bandmates — keyboardist Derry deBorja, drummer Chad Gamble, bassist Jimbo Hart and guitarist Sadler Vaden — recorded Weathervanes at Blackbird Studio in Nashville. Isbell’s wife, Amanda Shires, contributed fiddle and background vocals. Other guests include Mickey Raphael (harmonica), Sylvia Massy & Ian Rickard (background vocals) and Morgan O’Shaughnessey (strings).

The Weathervanes Tour currently spans March 1 through August 13. Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit announced April concerts in Cincinnati as well as May concerts in Omaha (Nebraska), Salina (Kansas), Lubbock (Texas), Dallas and Little Rock. June performances include stops in Fayetteville (Arkansas), LaGrange (Georgia), Birmingham (Alabama) and Palo Alto (California).

The tour continues with an appearance at High Sierra on June 30. From there the group hits Bend (Oregon), Canby (Oregon), Bonner (Montana), Seattle, Spokane (Washington), Dillon (Colorado), Tempe (Arizona), Los Angeles, Paso Robles (California), Las Vegas, Harrisburg (Pennsylvania), Boston, Port Chester (New York) and Huntington (New York) over the course of July. Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit wrap the lengthy excursion with August concerts in New Brunswick (New Jersey), Washington D.C., Toronto, Lewiston (New York), Richmond (Virginia), Salem (Virginia), St. Augustine (Florida) and North Myrtle Beach (South Carolina).

Kathleen Edwards, Amythyst Kiah, Angel Olsen, Deer Tick, S.G. Goodman and The Baseball Project will each open select shows. Tickets for the new dates go on sale this Friday, February 24 at 10 a.m. local venue times.

“‘Death Wish’ is about being in love with someone suffering from depression, with a powerful universal undercurrent about the fragility of life and the power and limits of love,” noted press materials. “That grown-up kind of love. Musically the track is beautiful and fascinating. Now it feels complicated and intricate, yet never fragile, like the subject of the song itself.”
