Acclaimed singer-songwriter Jason Isbell is the focus of the next installment in HBO’s Music Box documentary series. Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed premieres on Friday, April 7 with the trailer viewable below.
Directed and produced by Sam Jones, the film traces the recording of Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit‘s 2020 studio album Reunions. The documentary also profiles Isbell’s difficult upbringing in Alabama and turbulent time spent as a member of Drive-By Truckers.
Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed captures intimate moments in the studio, at home and beyond along with interviews featuring Isbell and his wife, Amanda Shires. Jason’s 400 Unit bandmates — Chad Gamble, Sadler Vaden, Jimbo Hart and Derry DeBorja — also spoke with Jones as did DBT frontman Patterson Hood, Reunions producer Dave Cobb and manager Traci Thomas.
Running With Our Eyes Closed was made during the peak of the pandemic and finds Isbell trying to make it through the tough period. “Most people don’t go to work with his wife,” Isbell said in the trailer about collaborating with Shires. “You’re fighting with all these voices inside your head,” Amanda noted of the pressure her husband puts on himself.
The documentary can be streamed on HBO Max following the initial airing on HBO. View the trailer, which premiered via Billboard, below:
