Goose began the second stop of their summer tour last night in Louisville. The Connecticut-based jam quintet uncorked an adventurous, 30-minute version of “Arrow” to start Thursday’s second set at the Louisville Palace Theatre.
Last night’s “Arrow” scored high on both the quantity and quality scales. The Dripfield track’s jam had two distinct movements starting in a dark and evil-tinged space before the band transitioned into a euphoric major-key progression that birthed a long, crowd-pleasing peak.
“Arrow” has underwent a huge evolution since Goose debuted the song at Goosemas VI in Norwalk, Connecticut on December 21, 2019. While always a jam vehicle, the band has come up with inventive ways in 2022 and 2023 to stretch far beyond the boundaries in different directions each time.

On Thursday, the first portion of the “Arrow” improvisation featured Peter Anspach on guitar trading licks with Rick Mitarotonda. Peter led the jam at points while Rick focused on rhythmic work. Anspach strung together anthemic riffs as drummer Ben Atkind kept the tempo speedy and bassist Trevor Weekz alternated his bass line to help provide direction.
Mitarotonda took control towards the 12-minute mark and reeled off one potent lead after another. Anspach connected with Weekz on a repeating pattern over which Rick shredded. Goose’s main lead guitarist built to the first of numerous climaxes while the band was still exploring a powerful minor-key progression. Peter went over to his electric piano as the “Arrow” jam moved to a blissful space. Atkind and percussionist Jeff Arevalo dropped the tempo leaving Anspach to play a gorgeous figure on piano that served as the basis for Mitarotonda picking up a full head of steam and leading towards the biggest peak of the half-hour segment.

Earlier in the night, Goose played a six-song first set that included favorites “Yeti,” “Jive I” and “Rockdale” along with more recent fare “Mr. Action” and “Brone” as well as a cover of Walter Murphy’s “A Fifth Of Beethoven.” The lengthy “Arrow” bled into “Bob Don” to get the second set underway before the five musicians worked through three songs debuted no earlier than 2022 — “Feel It Now,” “Everything Must Go” and “Animal” — to cap the frame.
Goose said farewell for the night to the Louisville faithful with a “Flodown” encore. The band returns to the Louisville Palace Theatre tonight. Watch a livestream for free with a nugs.net subscription.
