As reported, the first Dead Ahead concert event in Riviera Cancún, Mexico celebrating the music of the Grateful Dead concluded on Monday. The main stage action on the final day of the festival ended with two sets from an otherworldly ensemble featuring guitarist Bob Weir, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and drummers Mickey Hart and Jay Lane and bassists Don Was and Oteil Burbridge augmented by special guests Sturgill Simpson, Margo Price and Goose guitarist Rick Mitarotonda.
Monday’s first set came to a close with a cover of “The Weight.” Weir, Price, Simpson and Mitarotonda traded lead vocal duties on The Band classic in a style pioneered by members of the Grateful Dead in 1990.

“The Weight” features a total of five verses. Bobby Weir handled the first verse and went falsetto for the final stanza. Margo Price, with acoustic guitar in hand, powered the house band on the second verse. It was then up to Sturgill Simpson to shine on the verse that starts with the line “Crazy Chester followed me and he caught me in the fog.” While Oteil Burbridge and Don Was split time on bass, Was played electric bass on The Band cover.
