The inaugural Dead Ahead destination event kicked off on Friday (January 12) in Riviera Cancún, Mexico with acoustic Goose offshoot Orebolo among the performers on day one. Grateful Dead/Dead & Company guitarist Bob Weir joined the acoustic trio on a classic Dead song.
Orebolo consists of Goose guitarists Rick Mitarotonda and Peter Anspach and Goose percussionist Jeff Arevalo on upright bass. The trio’s set on Friday also featured an appearance by fellow Dead Ahead performer Sturgill Simpson who led the group on a performance of “Breakers Roar,” from Simpson’s 2016 album, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.

Weir emerged for the final song of Orebolo’s set. Playing an electric guitar, Weir stood with the trio and led them through the beloved Grateful Dead song written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, “Brokedown Palace.”

Friday’s Dead Ahead action also saw Mitarotonda and Simpson sit-in with Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros. Dead Ahead wraps today with a final slate of performances. Check out Sturgill Simpson’s sit-in with Orebolo here:
