Rodrigo y Gabriela released the second single, “Akatsuki,” off their forthcoming album OurHome, due out on September 18 via ATO Records. The band also added 2027 tour dates in Australia and Japan.
“Akatsuki” sees Japanese pianist Hiromi joining the guitar duo. The new album, OurHome, is deeply connected to Japan as Rodrigo y Gabriela recorded the album there and drew inspiration from manga, or Japanese comic books and graphic novels.
The latest single, “Akatsuki,” takes its name from the secret organization of mercenary ninjas in the manga work Naruto. Gabriela Quintero watched the series during late nights in the studio while recording and brought the idea to Rodrigo Sánchez. Later, the duo teamed with Hiromi on the track that also follows Naruto themes of “Buddhist cosmology, rebirth, compassion, and the shifting boundaries between hero and villain,” as per a press release.
“It was so nice to have them in my home country, and playing the beautiful piece inspired by Japanese manga,” Hiromi said. “I hope we can play the piece for the audience one day! Would be so much fun!”
“It’s so amazing to watch Hiromi play,” Sánchez added. “She was a child prodigy, but she has this incredible energy and adds a lot of percussive sounds – almost like us, but on piano instead of guitar.”
