Jack Johnson kicked off a two-week run with Lake Street Dive on Tuesday at iTHINK Financial Amphitheater in West Palm Beach. Johnson celebrated the occasion by inviting the band to collaborate on a cover of Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels.”

The excursion marks the continuation of Johnson’s SURFILMUSIC Tour commemorating his career merging surf culture, independent film and acoustic-driven rock. Johnson’s new movie, SURFILMUSIC, is in theaters worldwide now.

The Hawaiian guitarist and vocalist was joined for his 30-song set by his longtime backing band: keyboardist Zac Gill, bassist Merlo Podlewski and drummer Adam Topol. Johnson opened with “Mudfootball” and followed with a series of live staples, including “Flake,” “You And Your Heart” and “Breakdown.”

A medley of Johnson’s “Wasting Time” and his “Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down” collaboration with Gill and ALO led into a live score of portions of his 2000 surf film The September Sessions. Johnson then stepped to the mic to introduce Lake Street Dive.

“It’s the very first night of tour, we were so happy to jam some shows in the past with these guys,” Johnson said. “It’s so much fun playng music with them, we’re so excited for this run right now. So earlier today we got together and worked this one out for you guys.”

As Johnson mentioned, he has a history of sharing the stage with Lake Street Dive that dates back to 2017. Both groups teamed up for “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” a song from Petty’s iconic 1994 album Wildflowers they played together several times over the past decade.

LSD frontwoman Rachael Price and keyboardist Akie Bermiss shared lead vocal duties on the Petty cover with Johnson. “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” which hadn’t been performed by Johnson since 2023, featured Gill alternating between organ and melodica.

Johnson and his band loaded the rest of the set with fan favorites such as “Banana Pancakes,” “Upside Down,” “Good People” and “Taylor.” They also worked in covers of Sublime’s “Badfish” and Jimmy Buffett’s “A Pirate Looks At Forty” before closing the concert with the beloved “Better Together.”

The SURFILMUSIC Tour continues tonight in Tampa. Lake Street Dive will be on the road with Johnson through September 4.
