The Dead Ahead band consisting of Grateful Dead members guitarist Bob Weir and drummer Mickey Hart along with guitarists Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi as well as bassists Oteil Burbridge and Don Was plus drummer Jay Lane and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti took the stage on the penultimate day of the festival of the same name in Riviera Cancun, Mexico on Sunday. Dead Ahead presented two sets on the beach at Moon Palace Cancun last night featuring special guests Sturgill Simpson and Brittney Spencer.

The ensemble put together for the first of two Dead Ahead performances at the inaugural event kicked off their opening frame with a version of the Sunday sermon “Samson & Delilah” that saw Weir, Spencer and Tedeschi trade lead vocal duties. Sturgill Simpson then helmed a take on the traditional “Dark Hollow” before Tedeschi guided the band through “Mr. Charlie.” A run of Grateful Dead classics continued with Bobby Weir and Susan Tedeschi exchanging verses on “Ramble On Rose” and Burbridge belting out the Hunter/Garcia ballad “High Time.” Oteil would hold down the bottom end on the first set as Don Was played bass for most of the second set.

After “High Time,” the Dead Ahead band launched into an expansive “Truckin'” that gave way to “Uncle John’s Band” ahead of Brittney Spencer’s return to duet with Weir on “Looks Like Rain.” Spencer stuck around for a rousing take on Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Turn On Your Lovelight” to close Sunday’s first set.

Susan Tedeschi, Bobby Weir, Mickey Hart, Don Was, Jeff Chimenti, Derek Trucks and Sturgill Simpson lit into a “Sugaree” featuring Tedeschi and Weir on lead vocals to start the second set last night. The same lineup then offered a cover of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” which began with a taste of Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy.” Dead Ahead and friends would be led through the Traffic classic in its entirety by Simpson complete with a “Hey Jude Reprise” following the oft-paired “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider.”

Psychedelic era gem “Dark Star” bled into the evening’s +20-minute “Drums”/”Space” excursion. Oteil Burbridge joined Mickey Hart and Jay Lane for the former in a throwback to their Dead & Company days. Hart then strummed the Beam to introduce a “Space” excursion featuring Weir, Trucks, Simpson, Chimenti and Was. Lane and Hart were back on the drums for a Sturgill-sung rendition of J.J. Cale’s “Call Me The Breeze,” marking Bobby’s first performance of the tune since February 13, 2013.
