Dave Matthews Band kicked off a late summer stint on the West Coast at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on Friday. The concert saw DMB welcoming keyboardist Cory Henry for a pair of tunes including the classic “Tripping Billies.”
Dave Matthews Band keyboardist Buddy Strong got the show underway with a gorgeous piano intro to “You & Me,” the first time the Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King track opened a concert, as per DMBAlmanac. Released in 2009, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King was a tribute album to DMB founding saxophonist LeRoi Moore. August 19 marked 17 years since his passing.

The initial stages of the concert saw the band blend material from the aughts (“So Right,” “Stolen Away on 55th & 3rd”) with older deep cuts (“Recently,” “Raven”). A mix of classics such as “Crush,” “Say Goodbye” and “Ants Marching” were trotted out mid-set along with songs from the band’s last two studio albums, “Do You Remember” (Come Tomorrow) and “Madman’s Eyes” (Walk Around The Moon). Following “Ants Marching,” renowned keyboardist Cory Henry joined Buddy in key world.
The sit-in began with another GrooGrux King cut, “Lying in the Hands of God.” The song contains some interesting interplay between saxophonist Jeff Coffin and guitarist Tim Reynolds. Henry entered that conversation with some well-placed organ runs and swells before unleashing a sizzling solo to close the tune. Henry then moved up to Buddy’s Moog synthesizer for another scorcher on the Crash favorite “Tripping Billies.”
Next, DMB went it alone for “You Might Die Trying,” before sealing the set with the oft-played “So Much To Say” > “Anyone Seen The Bridge” > “Too Much” sequence. Dave Matthews' solo segment saw the guitarist performing the recently debuted “Take All Day” before the band joined him to cap the concert with “Warehouse.”
