Much has changed for both Widespread Panic and the world at large in the 27 years since the band last released an official music video. While MTV may not be the video-focused channel it was in 1997, Panic decided to honor late Bloodkin co-founder Daniel Hutchens by putting out a visual for “Trashy.”
“Trashy” is a nearly 10-minute cover featured on the sextet’s forthcoming studio album, Hailbound Queen. The LP due on November 8 will be Panic’s second of 2024 coming on the heels of the recently released Snake Oil King.

Widespread Panic tapped filmmaker and musician Deren Ney to direct the official “Trashy” music video. “The video I directed for Widespread Panic’s ‘Trashy’ premieres at 5pm!” the co-founding guitarist wrote in a Facebook post on Friday. “It’s a heartfelt tribute to Danny Hutchens from Bloodkin, the late brilliant songwriter who penned the tune, and is full of visuals and Easter eggs that old-school panic fans will get a kick out of.”
Among the visuals is a “Space Wrangler” arcade console that shows the band rendered in retro 8-bit style. The avatar of bassist Dave Schools shoots flames from a bazooka at the end of the video game-themed animated segment. Ney also calls back to past Widespread Panic Halloween concepts within the video.

Bloodkin and Widespread Panic were both formed in Athens, Georgia in 1986. Each act amassed huge catalogs of original songs by 1990. Panic has frequently covered several Bloodkin tunes including “Who Do You Belong To?,” “End Of The Show” and “Can’t Get High.” Tragically, Danny Hutchens — who co-founded Bloodkin with Eric Carter — died on May 9, 2021 at age 56.
Widespread Panic played a Bloodkin set at Red Rocks on June 27, 2021 in memory of Daniel Hutchens. The Panic debut of “Trashy,” a song featured on Bloodkin’s 2021 album Black Market Tango, came during the Bloodkin set. “Trashy” has been a staple for the sextet ever since.
“Aunt Avis,” the band’s last official music video, was directed by Billy Bob Thornton and released in 1997. Widespread Panic also shared videos for “Airplane,” “Wonderin'” and “Postcard” in 1993 and 1994.
