Whether you’re unfamiliar with work of Leonard Cohen, the Canadian singer-songwriter who died yesterday, or are a huge fan, a 1988 documentary from the BBC offers an interesting look at his career up until that point.

Songs From The Life Of Leonard Cohen was originally broadcast on the BBC in 1988 and released on VHS shortly thereafter but has been long out of print. The documentary includes interview footage shot on location near Athens and New York City as well as rarely seen clips from Leonard’s childhood and early days in the music industry. There’s also plenty of performance footage such as fantastic versions of “First We Take Manhattan,” “Chelsea Hotel No. 2,” “Hallelujah,” “Bird On A Wire” and “Joan Of Arc.”
