Tedeschi Trucks Band welcomed opening act Cris Jacobs and his band’s keyboardist, Tuck Ryan, for separate sit-ins during Monday’s Chicago Theatre concert. The third of four nights at the venue also found Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks playing instruments with deep connections to blues and rock history.

Jacobs returned late in TTB’s October 26 set for The Rolling Stones’ “Loving Cup.” The guitarist stayed aboard for “Leavin’ Trunk,” a blues standard recorded by Taj Mahal, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “Volunteered Slavery” to close the main set.

TTB began the encore with Dolly Parton’s “Wildflowers” before bringing out Ryan for Derek And The Dominos’ “Got To Get Better In A Little While.” Trucks played Lonnie Mack’s 1958 Gibson Flying V, known as “Number 7,” for the closing number.

In addition to his role in Jacobs’ band, Ryan is a Lancaster, Pennsylvania-based singer-songwriter who co-founded The Quiet Riders in 2020. His solo releases include the four-song Moving Towards The Light, issued in 2024.

Earlier in the evening, Tedeschi played Mike Bloomfield’s 1963 Fender Telecaster during “I Want More” and the ensuing “Willie The Pimp.” Bloomfield famously used the instrument while backing Bob Dylan at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Both guitars were lent to TTB by Family Guitars.

The concert opened with “Midnight In Harlem” and included “I’m Gonna Be There,” “How Blue Can You Get?,” “Gravity” and “Don’t Drift Away” before “Keep On Growing.” An Isaac & Kebbi jam later led into “Let Me Get By,” which incorporated “Mountain Jam” and “Circle Be Unbroken” teases.

Another notable pairing arrived after “Take Me As I Am” and “Hero,” when TTB linked John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” with Jerry Garcia’s “Sugaree.” “I Got You” followed before Jacobs returned for the set-closing collaboration.

Tedeschi Trucks Band concludes the Chicago Theatre run tonight, Tuesday, October 27. nugs subscribers can watch livestreams and replays of the Chicago shows.
