Watch Umphrey’s McGee & Daniel Donato Join Forces For ‘Nothing Too Fancy’ & Tyler Childers Cover
Daniel stuck around for a rollicking rendition of Childers’ “Whitehouse Road.”
Umphrey’s McGee shared pro-shot video of their recent collaboration with guitarist Daniel Donato on original instrumental “Nothing Too Fancy” and a cover of Tyler Childers’ “Whitehouse Road.” The team up took place on August 25 at Salvage Station in Asheville, North Carolina.
The concert also saw Ween drummer Claude Coleman Jr. and Goose’s Ben Atkind on drums filling in for Kris Myers who recently underwent shoulder surgery. Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country opened up the concert and Donato returned to guest with UM during their second set with Atkind on drums. “We have a new friend of ours gonna join us, please give it up for Daniel Donato,” UM keyboardist Joel Cummins told the crowd. Donato then took a spot between guitarist Jake Cinninger and bassist Ryan Stasik as “Nothing Too Fancy” began. The Nashville-based guitarist showed off his rhythm skills first before engaging Brendan Bayliss in a call-and-response segment. Cinninger soon got in on the action as all three guitarists were shredding at the same time.
After the turnaround, Umphrey’s and their guest feasted on a reggae-tinged progression with Donato utilizing a distorted wah tone. Daniel led a build to a powerful peak before going toe-to-toe with Cinninger to close out the 18-minute “Nothing Too Fancy.” Bayliss then asked the audience if it was okay if Daniel stayed up for another song. UM and Donato acknowledged the roars in approval by launching the South Bend, Indiana-formed band’s second “Whitehouse Road” of 2023. Donato unfurled a heroic solo between verses of the song off Childers’ 2017 debut album Purgatory.
