Tedeschi Trucks Band brought their Deuces Wild Tour to Richmond, Virginia over the past two nights. Each show at the Altria Theatre featured a different Van Morrison cover.
The 12-piece ensemble performed the Northern Irish musician’s “Into The Mystic” early in the second set on Tuesday night. Wednesday’s show featured Van The Man’s “Caravan” to kick off the closing stanza.

While “Into The Mystic” had been performed previously by the TTB, the debut rendition was much different than the version laid down in Richmond. Tedeschi Trucks Band first played “Into The Mystic” at their Garden Party in Boston last September. Special guest Warren Haynes, TTB guitarist/co-leader Derek Trucks‘ former The Allman Brothers Band bandmate, handled lead vocals on the cut from Morrison’s iconic 1970 Moondance album in Boston. “Into The Mystic” has been covered regularly by Haynes in various projects including the ABB, solo efforts, Gov’t Mule and The Dead.
Tedeschi Trucks Band’s second “Into The Mystic” was sung by the group’s keyboardist Gabe Dixon. Gabe did a fine job in fronting the cover which saw Derek Trucks shred a stellar solo as he did in Boston. “Into The Mystic” fell into the evening’s three-slot in the second set following I Am The Moon’s (2022) “Last Night In The Rain” and a take on Blind Joe Reynolds’ “Outside Woman Blues.”

Susan Tedeschi helmed the Tedeschi Trucks Band “Caravan” debut to get last night’s second set underway. Like “Into The Mystic,” the song is also featured on the 1970 Van Morrison album Moondance. Tedeschi belted out “Caravan” in her own inimitable style. The TTB kept the version concise.

Tedeschi Trucks Band played a total of 11 songs from their 2022 album cycle I Am The Moon over the course of the two nights in Richmond. “Shame,” “Do I Look Worried,” “Anyhow” and “Let Me Get By” were the only non-I Am The Moon originals performed at Tuesday’s cover-heavy show. The Beatles’ “I’ve Got A Feeling” was trotted out for just the second time since 2021 by the TTB on opening night at the Altria with “Gin House Blues” (Bessie Smith), “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” (Bob Dylan), “Let’s Go Get Stoned” (The Coasters) and “Everybody’s Got To Change Sometime” (Taj Mahal) among other covers played on Tuesday.
Classics “Made Up Mind,” “Midnight In Harlem” and “Come See About Me” made the setlist last night. Four songs off I Am The Moon saw action on Wednesday including a typically long and strong “Pasaquan.” The group’s first-ever “Caravan” was among 10 covers played along with such songs as “Had To Cry Today” (Blind Faith), “It Ain’t Fair” (Aretha Franklin), Derek & The Dominos numbers “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?” and more.
Tonight, the Deuces Wild Tour moves on to Durham, North Carolina. Duane Betts will open the concert at Durham Performing Arts Center with an acoustic duo set also featuring longtime collaborator Johnny Stachela. TTB drummer Tyler “Falcon” Greenwell joined the pair of percussion during their opening set in Washington D.C. last week before Duane Betts sat-in with Tedeschi Trucks Band on two Allman Brothers classics later in the night.
