Tedeschi Trucks Band made a long-awaited return to The Beacon Theatre on Thursday night, kicking off a three-show run at the historic New York City venue. The second set saw the band joined at various points by guest saxophone player Ravi Coltrane.

Tedeschi Trucks Band played The Beacon each fall starting in 2011 (save for 2020). The group led by guitarists Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi ended the streak and did not perform at the Beacon in 2023, instead playing Madison Square Garden for the first time last September.

Thursday’s TTB concert was their 54th at The Beacon and began with a first set heavy on songs from the band’s 2022 album I Am The Moon, including opener “Hear My Dear” and the expansive set-closing Trucks showcase, “Pasaquan.” The first half included a take on Taj Mahal’s “Everybody’s Got To Change Sometime” and a performance of Blind Faith’s “Had To Cry Today” that was played inside the I Am The Moon track “Circles ‘Round The Sun.”

Ravi Coltrane, the son of jazz giants Alice Coltrane and John Coltrane, made his first appearance at the start of the second set. Tedeschi sang a gorgeous interpretation of the Bonnie Raitt-popularized “I Can’t Make You Love Me” while backed by Coltrane and TTB keyboardist Gabe Dixon. Coltrane came back later in the second set to sit in on “Part Of Me” and joined in the set-closing cover of Billy Taylor’s “I Wish I Knew (How It Would Feel To Be Free).”

Elsewhere, the second set presented additional I Am The Moon material, the recently debuted “It Ain’t Fair” by Aretha Franklin, “Anyday” by Derek & The Dominos, the B.B. King popularized “How Blue Can You Get?” and their staple original “Do I Look Worried.” The encore was Bill Withers’ thoughtful “I Wish You Well.”
