Bob Dylan will release The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings on November 6 via Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings/Sony Music Entertainment. The massive box set is previewed today with “Going, Going, Gone” from the May 16, 1976 concert in Fort Worth, Texas.
The entire concert at Fort Worth’s Tarrant County Convention Center Arena is also set to arrive on November 6 as a 3-LP set. It is a snapshot of Bob Dylan’s landmark tour in 1976. The 39-disc box set — boasting 371 previously unreleased tracks — documenting the trek includes rare audio of the Hard Rain performance from Fort Collins, Colorado, which was broadcast by NBC for one night only.
“‘Idiot Wind’ in NBC’s Hard Rain is among the most rageful and brilliant performances Dylan ever committed before camera,” music journalist Mikal Gilmore wrote in the liner notes of the box set. “Yet again, it was for nought. […] One night, one hour only. It never saw any time in a theater. It was never rebroadcast, never issued as a video tape or DVD. It’s gone. All that’s left of the Rolling Thunder movie that was never made but instead played out on stages for four-and-a-half weeks in the spring of 1976, is what you now hold in your hands. Play the music, close your eyes, and watch the story.”
Not only was Dylan in top form on the 1976 Tour, he also had his ace players from the Desire sessions in tow: bassist Rob Stoner, violinist Scarlet Rivera and drummer Howie Wyeth. Notably, Bob reunited with Joan Baez for duets throughout the tour. Additionally, Mick Ronson, of David Bowie’s Spiders From Mars band, joined Dylan along with Steven Soles, David Mansfield and T Bone Burnett.
“The Rolling Thunder Revue was the first national punk rock tour,” Burnett recalled. “It opened a door that led to a furious explosion of new music—The Clash, Elvis Costello, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols and on and on. Dylan had done it again. He is good at walking through doors that no one else even sees, doors that others think are walls.”
