Tedeschi Trucks Band Offers Simmering Prince Cover With Jimmie Vaughan In Austin

Tedeschi Trucks Band closed out a two-night stand at the Moody Amphitheater in Austin, Texas on Friday with support from legendary blues guitarist Buddy Guy. The TTB welcomed another blues great during the concert, Jimmie Vaughan, for a cover of Prince’s “1999.”

Buddy Guy hopped on TTB tour in the Dallas/Fort Worth area before traveling on to Austin with the band. During his opening set Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi and Jimmie Vaughan joined Buddy for “Grits Ain’t Groceries.”

Tedeschi Trucks Band kicked off their set with a pair of title tracks, “Made Up Mind” and “I Am The Moon.” The early portion of the set also saw a mini Derek and the Dominoes section of “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?”

The “1999” cover came in the 13th song slot and saw Tedeschi Trucks Band welcoming Jimmie Vaughan. Led by vocalist Mike Mattison, TTB’s version of the Prince classic is a simmering bluesy rendition which saw Jimmie Vaughan handling most of the solo work with Derek Trucks adding tasty blues accents.

Following the Prince cover, Tedeschi Trucks Band offered “Idle Wind” and Susan Tedeschi solo cut, “Just Won’t Burn.” The main set came to a close with the classic “Bound for Glory.”

The encore began with the live audience debut of a new song called “Moon.” The band recently unveiled the tune during a livestream session when they were forced offstage by a storm during their Sun, Sand & Soul event in Florida. TTB sealed the show with the Matthew Moore-penned, Joe Cocker-recorded “Space Captain.”
