Bonnie Raitt Honors John Prine With Susan Tedeschi & Slides With Derek Trucks At Sun, Sand & Soul

After sitting in with Tedeschi Trucks Band on opening night of their Sun, Sand & Soul Weekend, Bonnie Raitt returned the favor during her set Friday at Seascape Resort in Miramar Beach, Florida. TTB guitarists Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks and keyboardist Gabe Dixon were tasked with performing alongside Raitt and her band.

Among Raitt’s signature songs is her close association with John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery,” which she helped popularize by recording it for her 1974 album, Streetlights. “Angel From Montgomery” has been a staple of Tedeschi Trucks Band live setlists for many years (often infusing the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree”), with Tedeschi handling lead vocals.

Those singing duties were shared between Raitt and Tedeschi when the latter was brought onstage by the former.

“It is my great pleasure and honor to bring out one of my favorite singers and guitar players – songwriters, a sweetheart, and as funky as they come, won’t you welcome my friend, Susan Tedeschi,” Raitt said. “And she’s so pretty too. We’re going to pay tribute to one of our favorite people, John Prine … John, wherever you are, this one’s for you babe.”

Tedeschi was also part of a collaborative performance the B.B. King popularized “Never Make Your Move Too Soon” that also featured Derek Trucks accompanying on guitar and Gabe Dixon on keyboards. Tedeschi, Trucks and Dixon also backed Raitt on a performance of “I Believe I’m in Love With You” by Kim Wilson of The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
