Tedeschi Trucks Band kicked off a 10-show residency at The Beacon Theatre in New York City last night. The 12-piece ensemble previewed their new record, Future Soul, with a pair of live debuts and premiered a timely cover of CSNY’s “Ohio.”
Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks led their namesake band through a 22-song performance at the venue they’ve played more than any other in their career. After opening with oldie “Anyhow,” the TTB turned their attention to Future Soul for “I Got You” and live premieres of “Hero” and “Under The Knife.”
“It’s been a crazy world out there,” Tedeschi told the crowd to introduce the subsequent “Part Of Me.” Next came “It’s So Heavy” before the group nodded to The Allman Brothers Band’s long history of March performances at The Beacon by covering “Stand Back.”
A poignant “Soul Sweet Song” followed in honor of late founding multi-instrumentalist Kofi Burbridge. The band then dug deep to end the first set with their first performance of “Love Has Something Else To Say” from their 2011 debut album Revelator since December 4, 2015.
Drummers Tyler “Falcon” Greenwell and Isaac Eady laid down a march pattern on their snares when the band returned from the intermission. Susan Tedeschi started singing CSNY’s 1970 protest song “Ohio” and the crowd reacted with huge applause. Tedeschi and the TTB vocalists traded lyrics on the first-time cover before the rest of the band joined in for the rousing “Ohio.” Derek Trucks unfurled a powerful guitar solo towards the end of the song.
The beloved “Midnight In Harlem” trailed “Ohio” and was followed by the pairing of “La Di Da” and “Get What You Deserve.” From there, the 12-piece linked Derek & The Dominos’ “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?” and turned to 2022’s I Am The Moon for “Circles ‘Round The Sun” and a 20-minute “Pasaquan.” Susan Tedeschi then led the group through her solo number “Just Won’t Burn” ahead of a set closing take on the Dr. John classic “I Walk On Guilded Splinters.”
Tedeschi Trucks Band said farewell with a two-song encore of “Let The Good Times Roll” and “Made Up Mind.” The 10-show residency continues tonight. Steve Earle and Vincent Neil Emerson are aboard as special guests.
