In March of 2017, the Tedeschi Trucks Band released the Live From The Fox Oakland live album/concert film. The 12-piece band recently honored the late John Prine by unveiling the never-before-seen bonus track featuring a cover of Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” the TTB worked into the Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia classic “Sugaree.”
John Prine originally released “Angel From Montgomery” on his self-titled debut studio album in 1971. Bonnie Raitt introduced the song to a wide audience with the version of the tune she recorded for 1974’s Streetlights. Numerous others have covered “Angel From Montgomery” over the years including Strangefolk with Jennifer Hartswick & Nick Cassarino for JamBase’s 20th anniversary in a take featured in our Gimme Shelter In Place series.

Susan Tedeschi started performing “Angel From Montgomery” live in 1999 as per Setlist.FM, a site which also notes the TTB debuted their version on September 22, 2012 during the group’s second annual Beacon Theatre run. The Tedeschi Trucks Band includes a verse and pair of choruses of “Sugaree” within their “Sugaree.” At the Fox, multi-instrumentalist Kofi Burbridge took a beautiful flute solo early in the song. Kofi sadly died on February 15, 2019.
