Railroad Earth fared Bob Weir well on Saturday at the Ardmore Music Hall near Philadelphia. The genre-defying septet premiered their cover of “Cassidy” in tribute to Weir during the final night of a four-city swing through the Northeast.

RRE — guitarist/vocalist Todd Sheaffer, violinist/guitarist Tim Carbone, mandolinist John Skehan, drummer Carey Harmon, bassist Andrew Ryan, keyboardist Matt Slocum and banjoist/guitarist George Guthrie — was deeply influenced by Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead. “What an honor to exist in the same timeline as Bobby Weir 🌹❤️ Thank you for the endless inspiration and light you shared, Bobby, may the four winds blow you safely home,” read a note from the band posted on social media shortly after Bob Weir's death was announced.

Todd Sheaffer sang lead vocals on the “Cassidy” cover debut with Carey Harmon handling high harmonies and Tim Carbone and George Guthrie filling out the vocal mix. The arrangement, which was trotted out in the middle of the second set, featured swirls of mandolin and fiddle provided by Skehan and Carbone, respectively. Railroad Earth didn’t stray far from the “Cassidy” theme during the jam, instead building the progression to a mighty peak.

“Let’s make some noise for Bob Weir,” Sheaffer said following the premiere to rapturous applause from the crowd.
