Primus continued their Onward & Upward Tour last night with a concert at the Saenger Performing Arts Theater in New Orleans. The trio welcomed surprise guest Puddles Pity Party to lead them through a cover of the Black Sabbath classic “N.I.B.” during their 16-song performance in the Crescent City.

Puddles Pity Party, the singing clown persona of Michael Geier, is currently on the road supporting “Weird Al” Yankovic on a tour that pulls into the Saenger tonight. Primus recruited Puddles Pity Party to open a series of shows last August.

The Onward & Upward Tour is Primus’ first headlining run to feature bassist Les Claypool and guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde joined by new drummer John Hoffman. The trio previously paid tribute to Ozzy Osbourne with a partial cover of Osbourne’s solo hit “Crazy Train” last Tuesday at their show in Bridgeport, Connecticut, hours after the Black Sabbath frontman died at age 76.

Puddles Pity Party emerged after Primus’ fifth song of the evening to front the performance of “N.I.B.” The trio previously teamed with Ozzy Osbourne to record a cover of the song from Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut album for the 2000 compilation Nativity In Black II: A Tribute To Black Sabbath.

Primus played “N.I.B.” once prior on May 20, 2000 at The Roxy in Los Angeles as per Setlist.FM. The same montage of images of Osbourne used during “Crazy Train” last week in Bridgeport was displayed as the trio and Puddles Pity Party started their joint “N.I.B.” performance in New Orleans.

Puddles Pity Party powerfully handled lead vocal duties on the Black Sabbath cover. LaLonde threw down a furious guitar solo between verses. More photos of Osbourne were shown as the four musicians concluded the tribute.

The Onward & Upward Tour pulls into Shreveport, Louisiana tonight. Primus will be on the road through a two-night stand in Sacramento on August 7 and 8.
