Pigeons Playing Ping Pong celebrated the release of their new album, Perspective, with a concert at Brooklyn Steel in New York City on Saturday. The Baltimore-based quartet debuted a new song and also welcomed special guests for the album release show which consited of one set and an encore.

PPPP — guitarist Jeremy Schon and Greg Ormont, bassist Ben Carrey and drummer Alex Petropulos — kicked off the set with the Perspective track “Water” fittingly followed by “The Liquid.” A pairing of Perspective’s “Move Like That” and “Beanstalk” followed with Pigeons offering an eleven-minute rendering of the latter.

Next, staples “Time To Ride” and “Kiwi,” with “Kiwi” stretching out to over 13 minutes. After finishing up “Time To Ride,” PPPP welcomed alto saxophonist Colin Walters and soprano saxophonist Tommy Weeks of Funky Dawgz Brass Band for the funky Perspective instrumental “Whirled,” which escalated into a dance party before the horns brought it home. The “Whirled” performance with the Funky Dawgz members marked the first time PPPP performed the tune live with horns as the studio version features horns as well.

Next up, Pigeons unveiled their brand new song. Ormont prefaced “Overtime” by talking about how the band was excited for the album to be out but that they should “probably write some new tunes” and that the song was “only a day old.” The quartet then headed into “Overtime,” a funky, jazz-tinged number. Next, PPPP embarked on an “Ocean Flows” excursion, in which they fit a cover of The Police classic “Walking On The Moon.”

Next, a 12-minute “Whoopie” came ahead of Perspective’s “Lost In Line.” The Funky Dawgz Horns then returned to help PPPP close out the main set with the staple “F.U.” For the encore, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong offered up “Schwanthem” which encompassed a cover of Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” ahead of a return to “Schwanthem” to wrap up the first leg of the Perspective Tour.
