Tom Marshall Details Phish’s ‘Mountains In The Mist’ Lyrics On ‘Under The Scales’ Podcast
Lyricist Tom Marshall discussed the lyrics to Phish‘s song “Mountains In The Mist” on the Under The Scales Osiris Media podcast. Comedian and fellow Osiris podcast host Mike Finoia also appeared on the episode.
Marshall and Finoia started the episode with a brief chat regarding Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio‘s The Beacon Jams residency. Marshall detailed his experience attending the performance at The Beacon Theatre in New York City on November 13.
The pair then turned to dissect the lyrics to “Mountains In The Mist,” which was first played by Anastasio on his spring 1999 solo tour and later made its Phish debut during their tour that summer. The rarity that has only made it into 24 Phish setlists was included on the Japanese edition of the band’s 2000 album, Farmhouse. Originally called “Bake & Boil” by Anastasio, Marshall revealed the neither he nor Trey remembered where that title came from. Finoia and Marshall also covered the origins of the song that arose from Marshall sending lyrics to Anastasio who completed “Mountains In The Mist” on his own.
The episode then presents a line-by-line breakdown of lyrics Marshall wrote for “Mountains In The Mist.” Listen to the “Mountains In The Mist” Under The Scales episode below:https://www.stitcher.com/show/under-the-scales/episode/077mountains-in-the-mist-79782665
