Strand of Oaks welcomed members of My Morning Jacket at the Moon Palace in Cancún, Mexico on Friday. The collaboration came during SoOaks’ set at MMJ’s One Big Holiday destination event.
The Strand Of Oaks band led by frontman Timothy Showalter kicked off the show with “Rest Of It” from the 2017 album Hard Love and the first part of the set also saw a performance of the LP’s “Radio Kids” split by “Galacticana” from the SoOaks 2021 album, In Heaven. “Keys,” off 2019’s Eraserland, came ahead of In Heaven’s “Jimi & Stan.” Two songs from 2014’s Heal, “Goshen ‘97” and “JM” followed ahead of In Heaven’s “Somewhere In Chicago.” A cover of Tom Petty’s “You’re So Band” came next ahead of the last song with the Strand Of Oaks band, “Shut In.”

Showalter then welcomed My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel, drummer Patrick Hallahan, bassist Tom Blankenship and keyboardist Bo Koster for “Final Fires” off Eraserland, an album that saw contributions from MMJ members. Before “Final Fires,” Showalter talked about how working with “these wonderful people truly saved my life in a lot of ways” before leading the group through the song. The collab continued with Eraserland’s “Ruby” and “Weird Ways.” “This is literally the best night of my 40-year existence,” Showalter said before a round of thanks yous. Tim and the MMJ members closed out the set with an 18-minute “Forever Chords.”
