Umphrey’s McGee keyboardist Joel Cummins presented another free livestream from his home in Santa Monica, California on Wednesday night. Cummins began with a trio of classical pieces and then performed his own material, UM gems and a handful of covers.
Joel jammed into Dmitri Kabalevsky’s “Sonatina #1 Prelude” to start and followed with Debussy’s “Sarabande” and Rachmaninoff’s “Prelude In C Sharp Minor.” The pianist then worked Herbie Hancock’s “Canteloupe Island” into the famed “Layla” coda. Next up was an extended version of Umphrey’s “Push & Pull” and “D’yer Maker D’yer Semba,” an instrumental Joel wrote for his wife, Dasha. He then dedicated Ben Folds’ “The Luckiest” to her.

The livestream ended with two song sandwiches. Up first was an adventurous “Slacker” featuring “Dear Lord” within. Joel explained the latter was the first song Umphrey’s ever played. Cummins went on to conclude the set by covering The Allman Brothers Band’s “Jessica.” He fit his original instrumental “Orfeo” in the middle of the ABB classic. Watch the whole set below:
