Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway made their lone appearance of the summer opening for Greensky Bluegrass on Wednesday at Kettlehouse Amphitheater in Bonner, Montana. The two acts joined forces to collaborate on three The Band covers as the evening’s encore mere hours after the world learned Robbie Robertson died.

Greensky Bluegrass — mandolinist Paul Hoffman, guitarist Dave Bruzza, bassist Mike Devol, dobroist Anders Beck and banjoist Michael Bont — went heavy on classic material in Bonner including “Bottle Dry,” “Kerosene” and their “Tarpology”/”One Slip” medley. Montana’s own Andy Dunnigan of The Lil Smokies emerged to help the quintet on “Windshield,” the penultimate song of last night’s second set.

When GSBG returned for the encore, they were accompanied by Molly Tuttle (vocals, acoustic guitar) and her band — Bronwyn Keith-Hynes (fiddle, harmony vocals), Dominick Leslie (mandolin), Shelby Means (bass, harmony vocals) and Kyle Tuttle (banjo, harmony vocals). “We lost a great one, Robbie Robertson, today, everybody, so we’re gonna play some music that we learned from him,” Anders Beck said in reference to the passing of The Band guitarist/singer-songwriter and composer at age 80. “Have fun. Dance your asses off.”

Molly Tuttle and Paul Hoffman led the ensemble through “Up On Cripple Creek” to start the +23-minute encore. GSBG’s first and only other version of The Band’s 1969 single came on November 26, 2016 as per Phantasy Tour. Dave Bruzza then belted out “The Shape I’m In,” a song the quintet has played over 50 times dating back to 2010. “The Shape I’m In” off The Band’s 1970 LP Stage Fright was an extended affair as nearly every musician on stage took a solo.

Beck thanked the crowd after “The Shape I’m In” drew to a conclusion. He said he hoped everyone had a good time and noted there were 52 strings of music on stage to provide music for those in the house. GSBG and Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway went on to cap the concert by performing “The Weight” off The Band’s iconic debut album Music From Big Pink. Last night marked Greensky’s fourth take on the song and first since January 31, 2019. The verses were handled in order by Bruzza, Hoffman, Tuttle and Beck.
