Kellen Asebroek of Fruition was Greensky Bluegrass‘ special guest on Friday night in New York City. Asebroek led the GSBG debut of Fruition’s “The Meaning” during the band’s rain-delayed and condensed show at The Rooftop at Pier 17.

Doors were held for over an hour “out of an abundance of caution” due to the threat of lightning. After a powerful but fast-moving storm blew through, fans were alerted the show would begin an hour late at 8 p.m. Greensky Bluegrass made the most of the situation, since the venue has a strict 10 p.m. curfew, and played a one long set.

Fruition and Greensky Bluegrass have a long history together that dates well over a decade and has seen both bands share bills numerous times. Plus, GSBG invited Fruition to perform at their inaugural Camp Greensky music festival in 2018 and at the first-ever Camp Greensky Iceland in 2023.

Originally released by Fruition on 2018’s Labor Of Love, “The Meaning” showcases Fruition’s gorgeous harmonies and Asebroek’s excellent songwriting abilities. “‘The Meaning’ is inspired by those instances when everything feels in its right place. When you are contemplating your own mortality and, for that moment in time, you feel content,” explained Kellen Asebroek of the song. “Lying in the grass with someone you love, watching the shades of blue in the sky darken as the sun goes down, being present.”

Kellen Asebroek’s appearance came after Greensky Bluegrass put the focus on material from recent years for the first two-thirds of their marathon frame. “We got a good buddy with us here folks. This is Kellen!” GSBG dobroist Anders Beck alerted the crowd. “Kellen’s in one of our favorite bands — the five of us have a favorite band — and that favorite band is Fruition. So that’s the deal.”

Anders went on to note Asebroek lives aross the East River. “So we said, ‘Hey, Kellen, we know you’re coming to the show and hanging out with us. Would you please do us the fine honor of playing a song with us?’ So, we asked him nicely. The moral of the story is if you ask nicely, you just might get it,” Beck noted. Asebroek then began strumming “The Meaning.”

Greensky Bluegrass mandolinist Paul Hoffman provided sweet harmonies, while Beck took an emphatic solo to bring “The Meaning” to a close. Kellen Asebroek played acoustic guitar in addition to handling lead vocals. “That’s what friends are for right there, man” Anders Beck exclaimed as Asebroek left the stage.
