Greensky Bluegrass launched an extensive summer tour last night that will take them from coast-to-coast by the time it wraps up in September. The Michigan-bred quintet’s Thursday night concert at Grinders KC in Kansas City saw the group focus on recent material with a handful of covers thrown in for good measure including takes on songs by Tyler Childers and Pink Floyd.
The band consisting of mandolinist Paul Hoffman, guitarist Dave Bruzza, dobroist Anders Beck, banjo player Michael Bont and bassist Mike Devol selected a pairing of “Monument” and “Streetlight” to kick off their first set in Kansas City. Both songs are featured on the latest full-length GSBG album, 2022’s Stress Dreams, which was also represented by “Screams,” “Give A Shit” and its title track later in the frame.

GSBG followed the opening sequence of Stress Dreams tracks with a cover of “Steam Powered Aereoplane.” Dave Bruzza captained the John Hartford cover and got a big reaction from the crowd each time he sang the song’s “Kansas City” lyric. More Stress Dreams numbers were split by oldie “Tuesday Letter” and staple “Past My Prime.” The five-piece took Keith Allison’s “Freeborn Man” for a ride to close last night’s first set.
A one-two punch of “Entirely Mine” and “Solstice” from Greensky’s recently released The Iceland Sessions EP with Holly Bowling started the second set. The jamgrass act then worked Stress Dreams standout “Reasons To Stay” into “Time/Breathe Reprise” off Pink Floyd’s legendary Dark Side Of The Moon album. Next, Paul Hoffman led his bandmates through the beloved “In Control” and the title track to the group’s 2019 record, All For Money.
Greensky Bluegrass wrapped last night’s second set with a version of jam vehicle “Don’t Lie” that encompassed a cover of Tyler Childers’ “Universal Sound.” A “Burn Them” encore punctuated the concert.
