Greensky Bluegrass brought their fall tour to Minglewood Hall in Memphis on Thursday. The guest-filled concert saw sit-ins from Trey Anastasio Band’s Jennifer Hartswick, Fruition’s Mimi Naja and GSBG tourmate Lindsay Lou.
Greensky kicked off their first set with a pairing of “Reasons To Stay,” off their 2022 album Stress Dreams, and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Señor (Tales of Yankee Power).” After “Blood Sucking F(r)iends,” the quintet returned to Stress Dreams with “Give A Shit” ahead of roughly 12-minute renditions of “Courage For The Road” and “Take Cover.”
Lindsay Lou and Mimi Naja then emerged for the Greensky rarity “Beauty and Pain.” Appearing on the band’s 2011 album Handguns, Greensky Bluegrass has performed “Beauty and Pain” just 18 times since debuting it in 2009, as per Phantasy Tour stats.
In Memphis, Naja and Lou joined mandolinist Paul Hoffman for gorgeous harmonies on the tune. While Lindsay and Mimi departed, Jennifer Hartswick then joined the quintet on trumpet for a nearly 15-minute rendering of “Leap Year” to wrap the first frame. Hartswick also sat-in with Lou during her opening set.
