Greensky Bluegrass ended a run of shows with The Infamous Stringdusters on Saturday at The Bellwether in Los Angeles. Both bands loaded the stage along with GSBG guest keyboardist Holly Bowling for a two-song collaborative encore in L.A. on a night that also featured a surprise appearance by Umphrey’s McGee keyboardist Joel Cummins.
The Infamous Stringdusters — banjoist Chris Pandolfi, fiddler Jeremy Garrett, guitarist Andry Falco, bassist Travis Book and dobro player Andy Hall — delivered a set to kick off the evening. The quintet mixed fan-favorite originals such as “Rise Sun,” “Gravity” and “Let It Go” with a batch of covers including the Grateful Dead’s “Tennessee Jed,” Jimmy Webb’s “Highwayman” and Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right.”

Saturday’s Greensky set was another “#6reensky” affair featuring Bowling on keys throughout. The band — mandolin player Paul Hoffman, bassist Mike Devol, dobroist Anders Beck, guitarist Dave Bruzza and banjoist Michael Bont — was also joined by Bowling as well as all five ‘Dusters when they returned for the encore.
The GreenDust encore began with Travis Book handling lead vocals on the Benny “Burle” Galloway-penned “How Far I’d Fall For You,” a song that is part of both bands’ repertoires. A series of solos from multiple members of each group as well as Bowling gave way to “After Midnight.” Dave Bruzza helmed the song written and originally released by J.J. Cale in 1966 which Eric Clapton covered for his self-titled 1970 solo album.

GSBG and Holly Bowling began their set on Saturday by coupling live staples “Burn Them” and “Courage For The Road.” The six musicians then honored L.A.’s own Dawes by debuting a cover of the band’s “Someone Will.” Chris Pandolfi emerged after the “Take Cover” that followed to lend a hand on the original “Screams” and Greensky’s first take on Flatt & Scruggs’ “Shuckin’ The Corn” since February 4, 2016.
Joel Cummins emerged a few songs later to take a spot in keys world next to Holly Bowling on the Norton Buffalo number “Ain’t No Bread In The Breadbox.” Cummins and Bowling engaged in a call-and-response segment during the extended version of the song that was frequently played by the Jerry Garcia Band. #6reensky ended the lengthy frame with a pairing of “Distracted” and “Worried About The Weather.”
