The life of co-founding Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir was celebrated in his hometown of San Francisco on Saturday, following his passing on January 10. After a public memorial at Civic Center Plaza in the afternoon, Grahame Lesh led an all-star “Howling Wolves” tribute concert at the nearby Warfield on Saturday night.
Grahame — who has also been leading his Unbroken Chain tributes to his late father Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh who passed away in October 2024 — assembled an ace cast of Dead players and Bobby’s bandmates in Wolf Bros for the sold-out show.
The band included Dead & Company bassist Oteil Burbridge and longtime Phil & Friends drummer John Molo. Alex Koford and John Morgan Kimock also took time behind the kit with Pete Sears holding down the low end on songs as well. Holly Bowling and Jason Crosby handled keyboards while guitarists included Barry Sless, Stu Allen, Mark Karan and Grahame.
Lesh also brought aboard The Wolf Pack string and horn players Brian Switzer, Adam Theis and Alex Kelly, who were joined by Dave Ellis on saxophone. Wolf Bros pedal steel player Greg Leisz was on hand along with former Furthur vocalist Sunshine Becker and Grahame’s Midnight North bandmate Elliott Peck providing back vocals.
The music got underway with an instrumental rendition of one of Weir’s signature songs, “Cassidy.” The first set also contained classic Bobby tunes such as “Playing In The Band” (sung by Grahame), “Estimated Prophet” (led by Crosby) and “The Other One.”
Folk legend Ramblin’ Jack Elliott then made an appearance, sharing some words for Bobby and performing Jimmie Rodgers’ “Waiting For A Train.” Reed Mathis would also lead a rousing “Black-Throated Wind” while Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz got in on the Bobby-led, Grateful Dead-covered Cannon’s Jug Stompers rocker “New Minglewood Blues.” Grahame brought the set home with “The Music Never Stopped.”
Set two got underway with another excellent Bobby number, “Jack Straw,” which saw the emergence of special guest Jackie Greene. The second set boasted “Terrapin Station” along with returns to “The Other One” and “Playin.” “Truckin'” with a “Cassidy” tag brought the second frame to a close.
The encore featured the full ensemble and began with Bobby’s American Beauty standout “Sugar Magnolia” followed by the accompanying “Sunshine Daydream.” The night came to a fitting close with “Not Fade Away.”
