Goose returned to the intimate confines of the historic Troubadour in Hollywood last night to play an “El Ganso” benefit concert for the La Playa Centro Comunitario in San José del Cabo, Mexico. Actor Will Forte of Saturday Night Live fame joined the band during the first set for a debut cover of Black Sabbath‘s “War Pigs.”

Goose last performed at the 500-capacity Troubadour back in February of 2020. The underplay came just four days after the quintet played nearby at the 5,900-capacity Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on their 10th anniversary as a band.

After opening with “Drive,” Goose went with the slow, melodic version of “All I Need” and then fit a “Welcome to Delta” jam within an ’80s synth take on “Indian River.” The five-piece followed with a cover of Herbie Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island.” Next, Goose looked to 2022’s Dripfield for “Borne” and delivered both parts of “Seekers On The Ridge.”

Will Forte emerged after “Seekers On The Ridge” to guide Goose through “War Pigs.” Forte revealed after the cover debut that the band had learned the song that day. Black Sabbath originally released “War Pigs” as the opening track on their 1970 sophomore studio album, Paranoid.

The actor did a solid job channeling Ozzy Osbourne on lead vocals. Multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach played guitar and ripped a solo before Rick Mitarotonda let the fretboard fireworks fly towards the end of the song. A “Tumble” was tacked on for good measure to close the first set.

The second set continued the cover-heavy theme as “Creatures” gave way to Otis Day & The Knights’ “Shama Lama Ding Dong” to open the frame. The latter bled into the Nina Simone classic “Sinnerman” before Goose tackled originals “Jeff Enborg” and “Everything Must Go.” Another huge surprise came next with a take on the Grateful Dead ballad “Ship Of Fools.” While Mitarotonda had performed the song twice with Phil & Friends and five times with Anspach and Goose’s Jeffrey Arevalo in their Orebolo project, Goose had never covered the song until last night.

Anspach fronted “Pancakes” to bring the second set to an end. Goose returned to punctuate the night with a “Slow Ready > (dawn)” encore. The band now heads to Memphis for a performance on Friday at the Mempho Music Festival.
