Goose presented their second of two Goosemas X concerts featuring a Goosemas. In Space! theme at the famed Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia on Saturday night. While the weekend saw the quintet visit different planets they created for each of the four sets, longtime Virginia resident Bruce Hornsby made a much shorter trip from nearby Williamsburg to Hampton on Saturday where he accompanied the band on keyboards and vocals for his breakthrough single “The Way It Is.”
The collaborative “The Way It Is” came in the middle of Saturday’s second set. Goose devoted the final set of the sold-out, two-night stand to reaching “Vivadora,” a Neon Jungle planet. The stage was decorated to represent the planet and as they did all weekend, members of Goose wore spacesuits initially shown off in the Goosemas. In Space! video aired before Friday’s show and the run.
Hornsby emerged to huge cheers of “Bruuuce!” from Goose fans. The pianist then used multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach‘s Nord Stage 3 keyboard to play an extended introduction to the title track of his 1986 album with The Range as Anspach looked on. Drummer Ben Atkind provided the fill that connected the intro with the song proper. Guitarist Rick Mitarotonda swapped lead vocal duties with Bruce Hornsby. Anspach worked electric piano tones in the mix via his Vintage Vibe keyboard. Both Mitarotonda and Hornsby dug into solos on their respective instruments.

Goose debuted their version of “The Way It Is” at Jewel Nightclub in Manchester, New Hampshire on May 3, 2018. Thirty-two additional versions have followed since including Saturday’s rendition with the man who wrote the song.

Goose’s first frame on Saturday was a “bubble set” in which they explored a planet dubbed “Puffaria.” The first half of the opening stanza began with a wild “Pancakes” segment that saw the main part of the tune give way to “Doobie Song” ahead of debut covers of Post Malone’s “Circles” and “99 Red Balloons” by Nena. The latter bled into the conclusion of “Pancakes.” Another cover debut followed in Vampire Weekend’s “Big Blue.” Next came an adventurous 18-minute “Dripfield” and the Anspach-fronted “Red Bird.” Goose wrapped the set with their first-ever take on “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles,” a song written by John Kellette that dates back to 1918.
The trip to “Vivadora” included three songs referencing jungles. Goose launched the set by premiering a cover of ELO’s “Jungle” that together with the ensuing “Animal” spanned over 25 minutes. From there the five-piece delivered an “Echo Of A Rose” that encapsulated their debut take on Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Run Through The Jungle.” Out came Bruce Hornsby for “The Way It Is” next and then Goose went it alone for the beloved “The Empress Of Organos” featuring a debut cover of Kool And The Gang’s “Jungle Boogie” within to close the frame. Fan-favorite “Arcadia” was tacked on for good measure as the evening’s encore.
