Dogs In A Pile brought their spring tour to the Bowstring Wilmington in Wilmington, North Carolina on Sunday. The 420 show saw the jam quintet debuting the Dash Rip Rock parody song “(Let’s Go) Smoke Some Pot.”
DIAP launched the concert with “Crazy” before going on a seamless run consisting of “Jack & Coke,” a cover of The Meters’ “People Say,” “Craig and Pat,” “Hot Dog” and “The Ballad of Ms. Pepper and Ms. Paige.” Dogs wrapped the first frame with a pairing of original “Lattice” and a cover of the Vince Guaraldi Peanuts classic “Linus & Lucy.”

Set two got underway with “Yum T. Dum” and then headed into “Rabbit,” one of two nods to Easter. “Tillie” and “Snow Day” sealed the seamless second set-opened sequence. Next, Dogs premiered “(Let’s Go) Smoke Some Pot.”
Originally recorded by Danny & the Juniors in 1957, cowpunk purveyors Dash Rip Rock reimagined the rock ‘n’ roll classic “At the Hop” in 1995 as “(Let’s Go) Smoke Some Pot.” The song name drops several bands who are “smokin’ pot” including Widespread Panic, Pearl Jam, The Black Crowes, Blind Melon and more. In Wilmington on 420, Dogs keyboardist Jeremy Kaplan handled lead vocals on “(Let’s Go) Smoke Some Pot” while Jimmy Law ripped some rock ‘n’ roll guitar.
The band then offered “Bent Strange,” ahead of the second Easter nod of the evening, a cover of the psychedelic Jefferson Airplane favorite “White Rabbit,” which brought the second set to a close. Dogs returned to encore with “Say Something.”
