Dogs In A Pile delivered a four-night run at Old Town Pub in Steamboat Springs this past weekend. Friday’s show saw the New Jersey-based jam quintet welcoming The Horn Section’s Greg Sanderson and Chris Brouwers for a The Band classic and more.

Dogs In A Pile launched their Friday show in the Colorado ski town with “Didn’t You Know?” ahead of a cover of the Grateful Dead’s funky classic “Mr. Charlie.” Originals “Little Things” and “Blues for Brian” followed, with the latter seeing the band stretch their legs a bit.

Next, Dogs In A Pile brought out trumpeter Chris Brouwers and tenor saxophonist Greg Sanderson. The duo were founding members of funk outfit Turkuaz and are also in that band’s offshoot Cool Cool Cool. Additionally Brouwers and Sanderson have their own group, the aptly named The Horn Section, along with former Turkuaz baritone saxophonist Josh Schwartz.

In Steamboat, Brouwers and Sanderson helped Dogs In A Pile out on The Band’s “Ophelia.” The horn arrangement for the studio rendition of the song is the product of The Band’s Garth Hudson, who recently passed away, and includes woodwinds and brass. Another maestro, Allen Toussaint, arranged the horns for the brassier live version of “Ophelia” on The Last Waltz.

Brouwers and Sanderson skillfully navigated the work of those two musical titans as Dogs In A Pile — guitarists Brian Murray and Jimmy Law, keyboardist Jeremy Kaplan, drummer Joey Babick and bassist Sam Lucid — presented “Ophelia” at Old Town Pub. The brass duo also stuck around for Dogs original “Tillie.” Dogs In A Pile went it alone to wrap the first set with Kaplan’s “My Disguise” and staple “Look Johnny.”

A Steamboat appropriate “Frosty” opened the second set followed by a nearly 26-minute exploration on “Go Set.” The New Year’s Eve 2025-debuted song “Dangers of Rah Rah” kicked off a seamless sequence that saw the band fitting Ween’s “Voodoo Lady” within “Thomas Duncan, Pt. 2.” The second frame came to a close with Dogs In A Pile’s “Crazy.” The band returned to seal the show with a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Shine A Light.”
