J & J: Watch Jason Isbell Join Dinosaur Jr. On Blistering Neil Young Cover In Brooklyn

Jason Isbell had a busy Wednesday night in New York City, which included sitting-in with the Punch Brothers and Dinosaur Jr. Isbell was the latest guest guitarist to go head-to-head with Dinosaur Jr. guitarist J Mascis on a cover of Neil Young’s expansive classic “Cortez The Killer.”

Wednesday’s concert was part of Dinosaur Jr.’s residency at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn in celebration of the 30th anniversary of their 1993 album Where You Been. Along with Isbell, additional guests last night included comedian Clare O’Kane, Gumball’s Don Fleming and Jay “The Rummager” Spiegel, and Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace.

Each night of Dinosaur Jr.’s Brooklyn residency has seen special guests sit-in with the band, including Kurt Vile, Kim Deal, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, The Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser, The Hold Steady‘s Craig Finn and Tad Kubler, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo, Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes, and others.

Like Haynes and Ranaldo, Isbell joined Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph on a searing performance of “Cortez The Killer.” Isbell handled lead vocals on the song that first appeared on the 1975 Neil Young & Crazy Horse album, Zuma.

Dinosaur Jr.’s Music Hall of Williamsburg residency continues tonight Thursday, December 7. The run concludes on Friday, December 8. More guests are expected at each show, which, like Wednesday’s concert, will feature a complete performance of Where You Been.
