Dawes and Goose have shared the stage together numerous times in recent years and both bands are part of the Park City Song Summit 2025 lineup, though scheduled on different days. Dawes performed on Friday with special guests Duane Betts, Paul Hoffman of Greensky Bluegrass and Eric Krasno, and ended their set with a cover of “Animal” by Goose, who headlines PCSS today.
In May, Vulture’s “Superlatives” interview series focused on Goose and the group was asked by Jordan Hoffman to name a band that should cover one of their songs. Goose’s Peter Anspach handled the response to the question.
“I would like to hear Dawes play a Goose song, but I don’t know which one,” Anspach said. “The challenge is now out there.”

As mentioned, Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith and his brother, drummer Griffin Goldsmith, have played with Goose in various configurations, but those collaborations did not include “Animal.” The song was recorded by Goose for their 2025 studio album, Everything Must Go, which they unexpectedly followed up with the surprise release of a new album last week entitled Chain Yer Dragon.
Before starting “Animal” at PCSS, Taylor Goldsmith called for Betts, Hoffman and Krasno – who separately sat-in with the band earlier in the evening – to come back onstage for the finale. Taylor mentioned Anspach’s cover challenge and then proceeded to accept the prompt by leading the collective through “Animal.”
Watch a partial video of Dawes taking up the challenge of covering “Animal” by Goose below:
Hoffman added mandolin and vocals to Dawes’ “Quitter” and rare mid-set “All Your Favorite Bands.” Krasno added his guitar to the mix on “Comes In Waves” and the joyous singalong “When My Time Comes.”
Betts, who did a stint as a touring member of Dawes, played guitar and sang with his old band on a cover of The Allman Brothers Band‘s “Ramblin’ Man,” which was written by Betts’ late father Dickey Betts. Duane remained for subsequent performances of “My Girl to Me” and “Somewhere Along the Way.”
