‘David Byrne’s American Utopia’ Film Directed By Spike Lee Coming To HBO
HBO acquired the rights to air a film adaptation of David Byrne‘s American Utopia broadway show directed by Spike Lee. The cable network will premiere David Byrne’s American Utopia “later this year.”
“Spike and I have crossed paths many times over the years, obviously I’m a huge fan and now finally here was an opportunity for us to work together,” said Byrne in a press release issued by HBO. “I am absolutely thrilled with the result. The Broadway show was a wonderful challenge as well as an opportunity – it was a joy to perform and, well, best to let the quotes speak for themselves. Thrilled that this show and the subjects it addresses will now reach a wider audience.”
“It is my honor and privilege that my art brother, Mr. David Byrne, asked me to join him in concert, to invite me into his magnificent world of AMERICAN UTOPIA,” added Spike Lee. “And dat’s da ‘once in a lifetime’ truth, Ruth. Ya-dig? Sho-nuff. Peace and love. Be safe.”
Byrne’s Broadway show played at the Hudson Theater between October 2019 and February 2020. David was joined by 11 other musicians, including four percussionists for a mix of songs from his solo album of the same name, as well as other solo tunes, Talking Heads classics and a cover of Janelle Monae’s “Hell You Talmbout.” The 12-piece band took American Utopia on the road for an extensive world tour and a series of performances in Boston before the run on Broadway. David Byrne released the show’s original cast recording via Nonesuch Records last fall.
