Dave Matthews Band Liberates ‘Come Tomorrow’ In Grand Rapids

While many live music fans refer to a band performing a song they haven’t played in a long time as a “bust out” or “break out,” the Dave Matthews Band community has settled on the term “liberation” for songs missing in action for 100 shows or more. One such liberation came on Tuesday during the group’s first of two sold-out shows at Acrisure Amphitheatre in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where DMB liberated “Come Tomorrow.”

The title track from the group’s 2018 studio album hadn’t been performed by Dave since his set at a Raphael Warnock rally in Atlanta on November 28, 2022. Dave Matthews Band offered the last full-band version 12 days prior on November 16, 2022 in Dayton, Ohio.

“Come Tomorrow” is the fifth song crossed off the “Liberation List” on DMBAlmanac.com this summer, following revivals of “Kit Kat Jam,” “Snow Outside,” “Broken Things” and “Cha Cha.” Written by Dave Matthews and longtime collaborator Mark Batson, “Come Tomorrow” filled the five-slot in Grand Rapids.

Earlier, DMB opened the run with “Lie On Our Graves,” which was left unfinished leaving the opportunity for the band to cap their visit to Acrisure Amphitheatre with the reprise later today. A rare “Shake Me Like A Monkey” trailed behind along with the year’s first “Break Free,” the other tour debut unshelved in Grand Rapids. Next up was “I Did It” and the aforementioned “Come Tomorrow.”

Last night’s concert took place on 46th birthday. The keyboardist had a turn in the spotlight when he delivered a powerful organ solo and joined the fans in singing the “Hani, Hani” lyric from “#36” during the ensuing “Everyday.”

Dave Matthews Band sprinkled several classics into the last half of the set, including “#41,” “Granny,” “Jimi Thing,” “Too Much” and “Ants Marching.” The well-jammed “Jimi Thing” gave way to “Word Up!,” the only cover of the night.

Dave Matthews spoke to the crowd about his dissatisfaction with “the leaders in charge” to introduce the solo “Peace On Earth” that started the encore. The rest of the band then came back to close the concert with the oldie “The Best Of What’s Around.”
