Ween’s ‘Boognish Provides’ Collects 7 Unreleased ‘Chocolate & Cheese’ Tour Shows

Ween will release seven complete concerts from its 1994 – 95 Chocolate & Cheese tour for the first time. Boognish Provides arrives October 16 through Rhino as a 14CD boxed set, with a 2LP edition selecting 19 performances from the shows.

The recordings capture a change in how Ween performed live. After years of touring as a duo with prerecorded backing tracks, Gene Ween (Aaron Freeman) and Dean Ween (Mickey Melchiondo) took bassist Andrew Weiss and drummer Claude Coleman Jr. on the road. The seven concerts stretch from an October 1994 show at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, California to a June 1995 stop at Philadelphia’s Trocadero Theatre.

Chocolate & Cheese, released in September 1994, was Ween’s first album recorded in a professional studio. The new collection follows Rhino’s 30th anniversary reissue of the album, which paired the original record with 15 previously unreleased demos and outtakes. Boognish Provides shifts the focus from the studio to the tour that followed.

Across the seven shows, Ween plays 12 of the album’s 16 songs. McCabe’s includes a rare acoustic “Voodoo Lady,” while the October 30 concert at Chicago’s Metro features the live debut of “A Tear For Eddie.” The setlists also contain early performances of “Piss Up A Rope,” “The Blarney Stone” and “Flutes Of Chi,” all of which would appear on later Ween albums.

The archival release arrives as Ween remains off the road. The band canceled its planned Chocolate & Cheese 30th anniversary concert and stopped touring in 2024. Rhino has continued drawing on Ween’s catalog, including an expanded edition of 12 Golden Country Greats released this year.

A 24-minute “Vallejo” recorded at Athens, Georgia’s 40 Watt Club on February 10, 1995 has been shared to preview the set. The performance fills the vinyl edition’s fourth side. Preorder Boognish Provides here. Stream “Vallejo” below:
