Ween Loads ‘Chocolate & Cheese’ 30th Anniversary Reissue With Previously Unreleased Material

Ween will release Chocolate & Cheese (Deluxe Edition) in celebration of the 1994’s album’s 30th anniversary as a 3-LP vinyl set and digitally on August 2 via Rhino Records. The reissue consists of a remastered version of the original album along with 15 previously unreleased demos and outtakes. Out today from the set is outtake “Junkie Boy.”

Chocolate & Cheese, the fourth Ween studio album, features such fan-favorite songs as “Voodoo Lady,” “I Can’t Put My Finger On It,” “Freedom Of ’76” and “Roses Are Free.” The New Hope, Pennsylvania-based band led by Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo and Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman tapped Andrew Weiss to produce the follow-up to their major label debut, 1992’s Pure Guava.

Deaner listened to hundreds of hours of tapes from the sessions that yielded Chocolate & Cheese before he and Gener picked their 15 favorites that accompany the remastered original album on the forthcoming bonus edition. “When I hear it, I feel like I’m listening to an autobiography of our lives in the early to mid-’90s…If it sounds like we had fun making it, we did. That’s kind of what Ween is all about, though,” Melchiondo stated of the experience and jokingly added, “…keeping with Ween tradition, Aaron and I probably picked all the wrong songs, mixed them, and now here they are.”

Acclaimed audio engineer Bernie Grundman remastered Chocolate & Cheese from the original flat master tapes to provide the best audio quality. Additionally, Grundman mastered the bonus tracks using the best available cassettes and DAT tapes in the Ween archives.
