Recordings made by guitarist Neal Casal of covers of the Grateful Dead’s “Ship Of Fools” and “Mountains Of The Moon” have been released with new instrumentation added by Circles Around The Sun. Casal, who died by suicide in August 2019, co-founded CATS in 2015 to provide set break music for the Fare Thee Well Grateful Dead 50th anniversary concerts held that year.
The surviving members of Circles Around The Sun, bassist Dan Horne, keyboardist Adam MacDougall and drummer Mark Levy, recorded new parts to go with Casal’s recordings earlier this summer. CATS continued following Casal’s death, utilizing a rotating cast of guitarists. In March, they released a self-titled album featuring Casal’s final recordings.
