Bruce Hornsby tapped Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid and Chicago-based vocalist Jamila Woods to contribute to “Bright Star Cast,” his new single. “Bright Star Cast” is the latest taste of Non-Secure Connection, a studio album set for release on August 14 via Zappo Productions/Thirty Tigers.
Hornsby produced “Bright Star Cast” with Justin Vernon, Brad Cook and Wayne Pooley. “This attempt marks the seventh song of my career that deals with the issue of race in America, a deep, seemingly intractable problem that never seems to be solved in any satisfactory way- until, hopefully, now,” Bruce said in a statement.

“Bright Star Cast” is one of 10 tracks featured on Non-Secure Connection, an album containing guest appearances from Reid, Woods, Vernon, James Mercer, Leon Russell (via a demo recorded 25 years ago) and Rob Moose. Hornsby’s longtime band The Noisemakers also contributed to the LP as did The Orchestra Of St. Hanks.
The songs on the album were birthed during writing sessions for filmmaker Spike Lee. “It takes my music to a place that I like that sets it apart from other things I’ve done,” Bruce said of composing music for films. “I’m often looking to make a sound that I haven’t heard before and find a place in what I guess is the context of popular song for some new information.”
