The Friday of Memorial Day Weekend marks the first full day of the Summer Camp Music Festival. While the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic has postponed those plans, JamBase celebrates the 20th anniversary of the festival by devoting this week’s Full Show Friday to a Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers set that took place at Summer Camp 2011 featuring special guests Béla Fleck and Jimmy Herring. Additionally, fans can watch Live From Out There’s Summer Camp Virtual Festival: A 20 Year Retrospective today through Sunday.
Hornsby and his band performed on the final day of Summer Camp 2011, which was held at the event’s home of Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, Illinois. Fleck and Herring were each on hand at the festival for Sunday sets with their own bands: Béla with The Flecktones and Jimmy with headliners Widespread Panic. Both musicians emerged after Hornsby & The Noisemakers’ opening run, which included such classics as “Sunflower Cat” and “Spider Fingers,” and remained on-stage for the rest of the 70+ minute set.

Guitarist Jimmy Herring and banjoist Béla Fleck’s first song with Bruce and the band at Summer Camp was “Jacob’s Ladder.” The ensemble fit “Cartoons & Candy” and “Mystery Train” within “Jacob’s Ladder.” Jimmy then had a chance to shred on the “Cyclone” that followed ahead of “Candy Mountain Run.” The duo stuck around for “White Wheeled Limousine” off Bruce’s 1995 album Hot House as well as a cover of “Long Black Veil” and the set-closing pairing of “Rainbow’s Cadillac” and “Big Rumble.”
